How To Reduce Microplastics From Your Brain 🧠

Hi friend!

This one stopped me in my tracks.

A recent study from the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center found that microplastics are being detected in human brain tissue, meaning these tiny plastic particles can cross the blood-brain barrier (the protective filter that keeps toxins out of your brain).

Let that sink in for a second.

We’re talking about microscopic plastic fragments (from our water bottles, food containers, clothes, and even air) ending up in the most protected organ in the body.

WHY THIS MATTERS?

These plastics can trigger inflammation, oxidative stress, and potentially interfere with neuronal communication, which over time can contribute to brain fog, fatigue, and even long-term cognitive decline.

The good news?

There’s A LOT we can do to minimize exposure and protect our beautiful brains. I made a reel you can catch on my Instagram:

AND HERE ARE MORE TIPS:

1. Choose Glass Over Plastic

Store food and drinks in glass, stainless steel, or silicone containers (like this one). And please, don’t microwave your leftovers in plastic. Heat makes plastic chemicals leach faster.

2. Filter Your Water

This will be more of an investment, but a reverse osmosis or nanofiltration system is ideal if your budget permits. A more affordable option can be a glass water filter pitcher (like this one).

3. Say Bye-Bye to Water Bottles

Most bottled water has more microplastics than tap water. Don't buy plastic water bottles; drink from a stainless steel insulated bottle (like this one, so cute!).

4. Upgrade Your Cookware

Trade non-stick pans (especially scratched ones) for cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic (this is my favorite brand). Plastic-based coatings break down and end up in food.

5. Change Your Cutting Boards

This one surprises a lot of people! Plastic cutting boards shed microplastics into your food over time, especially when knife grooves develop. Switch to wood or bamboo boards instead (like this one); they’re naturally antimicrobial and much gentler on your brain (and the planet).

The same goes for your utensils. Ditch the plastic ones, and switch to wood/bamboo like these.

6. Watch Your Packaging

Go for loose-leaf teas, fresh produce, and brands using paper, glass, or metal packaging. Less plastic = less risk.

7. Clean Smarter

Microplastics settle in dust. Vacuum often with a HEPA filter, keep surfaces dust-free, and open your windows to let fresh air in. This is a good air purifier brand with reasonable prices!

Swap one plastic habit for a cleaner alternative... maybe your water bottle, food storage, or even your laundry routine. Every small change counts!

Hope all this info helps you.

Talk to you soon!

This Sunday, March 8th, we set our clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m., resulting in one less hour of sleep that night. Your brain will experience it almost like mini jet lag, even though you didn’t travel! So many of us will walk around feeling sluggish for days, and with good reason. Our brain relies on sleep to consolidate memories and clear metabolic waste through the glymphatic system, which works best during deep sleep. So when we lose that hour, our brain’s nightly “clean-up crew” gets...
