If youâre here in my newsletter and part of my CEO Wellness Club community, that means you are ambitious, a professional in your field, an entrepreneur, or a high performer with audacious goals. There's also a chance youâve heard (or said!) some version of this before: âIâll sleep when Iâm dead.â But neuroscience (and your pockets) begs to differ! And I keep telling you all the time... sleep is not laziness. It is crucial to your brain's biological maintenance and one of the most powerful productivity and wealth-building tools you have. đ¤ Today, on World Sleep Day, letâs talk about the truth many of us, high achievers, often ignore:Our sleep habits directly impact our brain performance, our productivity, and even (especially) our earning potential. Do I need to say more??? Quality sleep is not just a luxury; it's a fundamental pillar of brain health. Sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and overall cognitive performance. Moreover, if you arenât sleeping well and making it a priority, you are actively hurting your mental health as well (not only your brain), shortening your life, and reducing its quality at the same time. Now, thereâs a difference between sleeping and RESTING. I learned this the hard way after my own experience with less-than-stellar sleep. I started doing tons of research on the nasty effects of disrupted sleeping patterns and not resting enough. This has profound consequencesâon our health, our job performance, our relationships, our happiness, and pretty much everything else in our lives. Sleep deprivation, lack of enough sleep, or poor sleep quality will literally have your brain 'on fire' (inflammation). See photo below. Even if not intentional, if youâre the type of person who feels wide awake every night and tired every morning, you know how your internal circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle) can feel out of whack with the rest of the whole damn world. Lack of sleep translates into higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol the next day (this is no bueno). This represents the ânew normalâ for many of us. But it should warn us of the bigger danger lying ahead: burnout. Quality shut-eye time is a must in order to fuel your hustle and ambitions. đ Key Benefits of Quality Sleep:
đ Tips for Improving Sleep Hygiene:1. Establish a Consistent Sleep Schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, to regulate your body's internal clock. 2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine: Engage in calming activities before bed, such as reading, listening to soothing music, or practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation. I love adding relaxing essential oils to my humidifier (LOOOVE this lavender and chamomile one) and my Canopy bedside humidifier. They're having a wonderful special sale for Sleep Weekâup to 50% off sitewide. So run and take advantage of that! 3. Optimize Your Sleep Environment: Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool, and invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows to promote restful sleep. 4. Limit Exposure to Screens Before Bed: Avoid electronic devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers at least an hour before bedtime, as the blue light emitted can disrupt sleep. 5. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake: Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, as they can interfere with sleep quality and disrupt sleep patterns. 6. Stay Active During the Day: Engage in regular physical activity, but avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime, as it can stimulate the body and make it harder to fall asleep. 7. Mind Your Diet: Avoid heavy meals, spicy foods, and excessive fluid intake before bedtime, as they can cause discomfort and disrupt sleep. đ§ INVITE ME TO YOUR ORGANIZATION đ§âI would love to come to your workplace to deliver my Keynote "Sleep Optimization for Peak Productivity at Work and in Life". This Sunday, March 8th, we set our clocks forward one hour at 2 a.m., resulting in one less hour of sleep that night. Your brain will experience it almost like mini jet lag, even though you didnât travel! So many of us will walk around feeling sluggish for days, and with good reason. Our brain relies on sleep to consolidate memories and clear metabolic waste through the glymphatic system, which works best during deep sleep. So when we lose that hour, our brainâs nightly âclean-up crewâ gets...
